Dans une maison de santé, une redoutable infirmière, "La Chef", terrorise ses pensionnaires et fait régner, grâce à un arsenal de "traitements de choc", un ordre de fer, réduisant ses pensionnaires à une existence quasi-végétative.
Surgit alors McMurphy, un colosse irlandais, braillard et remuant, qui a choisi l'asile pour échapper à la prison. Révolté par la docilité de ses compagnons à l'égard de "La Chef", il décide d'engager une lutte qui, commencée à la façon d'un jeu, devient peu à peu implacable et tragique.

Publié pour la première fois en France en 1963 sous le titre La machine à brouillard, ce livre, rendu célèbre par le film de Milos Forman, est devenu un classique, traduit dans le monde entier et vendu à des millions d'exemplaires dans son pays d'origine. C'était le premier roman de Ken Kesey, chef de fil des "Easy Riders" qui a disparu en novembre dernier. Ce livre était indisponible (en rupture) depuis 1 an.
